(2000-50) News Release
Dodoma, Tanzania - Maria Minna,
Canada's Minister for International Cooperation, today announced a $46,000
contribution from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
to a legal aid project that concentrates on protecting and promoting the
rights of women and children in Tanzania. She made the announcement in
Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania, during a three-day visit to that country.
"I'm pleased to support a project that will protect the rights of disadvantaged women and children who are abused," Minister Minna said. "This project will allow them to make better use of the judicial system that should protect them."
The two-year project will provide poor clients with better access to legal aid by offering the services of a lawyer and two part-time para-legals. Counselling will also be offered to victims of human rights abuse, HIV/AIDS, spousal abuse and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation.
The project will be implemented by the Centre for Human Rights Promotion, along with the Dodoma chapter of Amnesty International, the Legal Aid and Counselling Clinic, the Tanganyika Law Society, the Christian Council of Tanzania and the Inter-Africa Committee.
